This page gives you a short tutorial on how to set up an account with an e-mail application program under Linux to use LoaPost. The instructions below apply to the mail application called Evolution.

LoaPost (previously branded as Loa PowerTools) should work on all Linux and UNIX versions running Java, even though we have not made extensive testings on different Linux platforms.

To use anything but the free version of LoaPost, you will need to set up a PayPal account first. After that, follow the instructions below.

Power-User Install

The tiniest descriptions of the install steps are:

  1. Get LoaPost, unzip it, and move the extracted files to the Applications folder as you would any other application.
  2. Run LoaPost.jav and set up your free demo account.
  3. Tell it what SMTP port to use (we recommend port 2525).
  4. Configure your mail application to use localhost as the SMTP server using the port you chose in Step 3. This is done by specifying the outgoing mail server as localhost:2525
  5. Once you have tried LoaPost, upgrade your account to give you more capacity.

You need to ensure that the Java application LoaPost.jav is running whenever you want to send e-mail from your application program. If you wish, tell your system to launch LoaPost.jav whenever your computer runs.

These simple steps are usually enough for advanced users. But if you'd like more-detailed instructions, please continue on below.

Detailed Install Instructions

1. Get LoaPost

You must get LoaPost from our Web site. The most-current version is always kept here. Be sure to download the Linux version.

Note that the files might be retrieved from the loapowertools.com rather than the loapost.com domain.

In a typical Linux environment, it will ask you what you want to do with the selected archive. We recommend saving it to your Downloads directory.

Once you have the archive, you should double click on it, and then select the archive directory named LoaPost to be extracted to the desired destination directory.

2. Launch LoaPost

Under Linux, you don't have to do anything special to LoaPost to configure it properly. But you do have to run it to get it to work:

  1. Find LoaPost.jav from within the LoaPost directory folder you saved in the step above, and launch it.
  2. LoaPost will download the latest updates from the Internet. It won't take long.
  3. Eventually, you'll see a dialog box requesting an id and password
  4. Click on Create New Loa Account (leaving id and password blank)
  5. Follow the prompts in the account wizard

When you open your account, we only need your e-mail address and password, but the rest of the information would be helpful to us, if you don't mind sharing it (we have a pretty good privacy policy, which you are encouraged to read). You'll eventually return to the prompt for your e-mail address and password. After you provide this information, you can click Login.

You should see a dialog box giving you some hints on setting up your mail client. Click on OK.

3. Tell The Evolution Mail Application To Use LoaPost To Send Mail

    1. Launch Evolution
    2. Select EDIT followed by PREFERENCES
    3. Select an email account for which would like to use LoaPost to send email
    4. Click on edit to start the account editor
    5. Within the account editor, click on the SENDING EMAIL tab
    6. Ensure that server type is specified to be SMTP
    7. In the server name field, enter localhost:2525
    8. Click on OK
    9. Close PREFERENCES

That's it! The e-mails you send will now use LoaPost to send mail.

Note that you can use the account editor to specify LoaPost as the outgoing mail server for any or all of your accounts using the procedure described above. LoaPost can even be used with POP or IMAP accounts.
